Old Kinetic Ropes- When should I throw them away?

"Hey Uncle Jon! I’ve got some kinetic ropes, winch extensions, and heavy webbing straps that have seen a few seasons of hard use on the trail. They're a bit dirty and fuzzy, but how do I know when a rope is actually unsafe and needs to be retired?"

Rigging gear takes a brutal beating out on the trails, and guessing whether a worn rope will hold is a game you don't want to play. A little trail dirt is normal, but structural fraying, melted fibers, or soft spots mean that line has served its time and belongs in the trash—not holding a 7,000-pound truck on an incline.

The Deep Dive:

Inspect for Frays, Cuts, and Glazing: Run your hands down the entire length of your rope or webbing. Severe fuzzy abrasion (where inner core fibers are exposed), deep cuts from sharp rock edges, or hard, shiny "glazed" patches caused by extreme friction heat are immediate red flags. If more than 10% of the outer strands are severed, the structural integrity of the line is compromised.

Feel for Hidden Core Damage: Synthetic ropes can suffer internal damage even if the outside looks decent. Pinch the rope along its length—if you find mushy, flat spots where the inner core has collapsed, or stiff, rigid sections that won't flex, the internal load-bearing fibers are broken.

Watch Out for UV Degradation and Age: Prolonged sun exposure, dried mud working into the fibers, and age silently destroy synthetic lines. If your recovery straps feel crunchy, faded, or stiff as a board despite being clean, they’ve lost their elasticity and tensile strength.

Upgrade Your Compromised Gear: When it's time to retire your old static straps or worn winch lines, don't skimp on the replacement.
