When a steel cable snaps, it recoils violently with enough force to shear off metal bumpers, shatter windshields, or cause fatal injuries. High-modulus polyethylene (HMPE) synthetic lines carry equal or higher tensile strength, store almost zero kinetic energy, and simply drop to the ground if they fail.
