How To: Calculate line tension for recovery

Calculating line tension before you attempt a heavy mud recovery is the difference between a smooth pull and snapping a recovery line. Knowing the actual load weight prevents equipment failure, keeps your frame square, and ensures everyone stays safe on the trail.

What You’ll Need:

  • Estimated Vehicle Weight (GVWR): The baseline weight of the stuck truck, including cargo and fuel.

  • Surface Resistance Factor: A quick multiplier based on mud depth and terrain.

  • Incline Angle Assessment: Extra load percentage added if pulling up a steep embankment.

  • Heavy-Duty Rigging Gear: A rated kinetic line like the BRODOZER Recovery Rope Kit, and a snatch block if line tension exceeds your winch or strap rating.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Determine the Base Vehicle Weight:

    Start with the gross vehicle weight of the stuck truck. A mid-size truck sits around 4,500 to 5,000 lbs, while a fully loaded full-size diesel or overland rig easily hits 7,500 to 9,000 lbs. Always round up to account for extra gear, bumpers, and bigger tires.

  2. Calculate Mud Resistance (The Stuck Factor):

    Mud acts like suction, adding massive resistance to the vehicle's base weight. Use these standard trail multipliers:

  • Wheel-Deep Mud (up to the rims): Multiply base weight by 1.5.

  • Fender-Deep Mud (buried to the frame/axles): Multiply base weight by 2.0 (Double the weight!).

  • Roof-Deep / Suctioned Stuck: Multiply base weight by 3.0.

  1. Add Slope and Incline Resistance:

    If you are pulling the truck uphill out of a ravine or creek bed, add an extra 10% of the total vehicle weight for every 10 degrees of slope. For example, pulling a 6,000 lb truck up a 20-degree muddy bank adds another 1,200 lbs of required line pull.

  2. Run the Final Tension Calculation:

    Combine your numbers. If a 6,000 lb truck is stuck frame-deep in mud (6,000 x 2.0 = 12,000 lbs) and pulling up a 10-degree incline (+600 lbs), your minimum required line tension is 12,600 lbs. Make sure your winch rating, soft shackles, and recovery ropes exceed this total working load limit with a comfortable safety margin!
